How Laser Hair Removal Works
Phase 1
Anagen (active growth)
The stage where the hair is directly connected to follicle’s blood supply.
Phase 2
Catagen (transition)
The phase where hair growth slows and detaches from the blood supply.
Phase 3
Telogen (resting)
The dormant stage before shedding and regrowth.
Since hair follicles transition through these phases at different times, multiple sessions are needed to target each follicle in its active growth phase for the best results.

What to Expect From Your Laser Hair Removal Journey
Before Treatment: Preparing for Your Session
Laser hair removal is a low-maintenance treatment, but a little preparation will help you achieve the best results. Here’s how to get ready for your appointment:
- Avoid plucking, waxing, or tweezing in the treatment area for several weeks prior to allow the hair root to remain intact. Shaving is fine but should be avoided for 24 hours before treatment.
- Arrive with clean skin—skip lotions, perfumes, deodorants, and other skincare products on the treatment area.
- Limit sun exposure and avoid tanning beds leading up to your appointment.
- Pause use of photosensitizing skincare products like:
- Benzoyl peroxide
- Retinol & hydroxy acids
- Salicylic acid
During the Treatment: What to Expect
- Smaller areas (like the upper lip) require just a few minutes.
- Larger treatment zones (such as the legs or back) may take longer.
- Your provider will give you a customized estimate based on your treatment plan.
The laser works by gently heating the skin, gradually delivering energy to the hair follicles without damaging surrounding tissue. Many patients describe the sensation as a warm tingling or mild pinching, similar to a gentle massage.
Aftercare: What Happens Post-Treatment?
Following your session, treated hair will gradually shed over the next week. To protect your skin and optimize results:
- Skip excessive heat exposure (such as saunas and hot tubs) for at least 24 hours.
- Avoid tanning beds for two weeks.
- Apply sunscreen consistently if spending time outdoors.
Mild redness or sensitivity in the treatment area is normal and temporary, fading within a few hours.
How Many Sessions Are Needed?
Since hair grows in cycles, multiple treatments are required to fully target all follicles during their active growth phase.
Most patients need six sessions for optimal results.
Treatments are scheduled four to six weeks apart.
Some follicles may require extra sessions due to hormones or natural regrowth.
Occasional maintenance sessions may help manage long-term regrowth from aging or hormonal changes.
